Is it time for the tin foil hats?
For the purposes of this article, I reference two main sources. The first is a paper published in Molecular and Clinical Oncology in January of 2020. You can see the entire article here. The article references 65 other articles and studies on both human and animal models of the dangers of the Wi-Fi enabled world we live in.
The second reference is EMF*D. 5G, Wi-Fi & Cell Phones: Hidden Harms and How to Protect Yourself by Dr. Joseph Mercola. Dr. Mercola’s book contains 89 pages of references to studies that back up what I am about to tell you.
Dr. Mercola and Professor’s Hardell and Nyber: thank you for your work in this field. Do not give up the fight. Given the telecom industry’s unlimited resources, the deck is certainly stacked against you. I will join you in this fight and hopefully educate my colleagues and friends to join in as well. Thank you.
What you are about to read should cause you great concern. The cover up to the hidden dangers of EMF radiation is unprecedented, even by the tobacco companies’ standards. I will include simple steps on how to protect yourself. To take a more active role, I encourage you to visit this page for products that can protect you and your family.
I am going to try and lay this out for you as simply and as boldly as I can.
The cell phones that we all carry in our pockets, stick between our legs while driving, tuck into our bras, and allow our children to play with to pacify them are like unto cigarettes of the 1950’s. Our homes are full of wireless routers, devices, and gadgets that are spewing harmful electromagnetic energy. In addition to the already existing cellular networks, we are about to add the 5th generation cellular technology (5G) that will only add massive amounts of fuel to this already raging fire.
In the 1950’s, smoking a cigarette was cool. Walking around with a pack of cigarettes in your shirt pocket or purse was a status symbol. After more than 40 years of cover ups, tobacco companies were exposed in the late 1990’s and paid out billions in damages. The truth finally emerged: cigarettes cause cancer.
You will see the same thing with cell phones but given the unlimited financial resources of the telecom companies, it may not be for another 50 years that the research (that is already done) and the fallout of health consequences comes to light. Do I have your attention now?
What is an EMF?
All of those devices we have in our homes, offices, and cars that make our lives easier are all powered by invisible sources of electric and magnetic energy. They all (especially Wi-Fi routers and cell phones) give off electromagnetic energy fields (EMF) in the form of radiation.
There are several different sources of radiation, both natural and mand made sources. Their frequencies are measured in hertz. Their frequencies range from Extremely Low Frequency (ELF) of 3 Hz all the way up to Gamma Rays.
EMF’s are broken down into non-ionizing radiation and ionizing radiation. Ionizing refers to the radiation having enough energy to break off an electron from a molecule (particularly oxygen). This loss of an electron causes the molecule that lost it to become extremely reactive and it damages the cell around it. Non-ionizing radiation is generally accepted as safe whereas ionizing radiation causes direct damage to DNA and causes cancer.
The previous way of thinking was that only ionizing radiation was dangerous and could cause cellular damage. Notice that medical X-Rays fall into the ionizing radiation category. This is why you have to wear that heavy lead apron when the dentist takes an X-Ray. The radiation in the higher frequencies readily enters your body and can damage the bonds of your DNA and cause cancer.
We now know that both ionizing and non-ionizing forms of EMF radiation can be dangerous. Ionizing radiation directly damages the covalent bonds of your DNA while non-ionizing causes indirect damage. Non-ionizing radiation can cause water to split into H+ (a hydrogen ion) and OH- Hydroxyl free radical. The hydroxyl radical can damage the mitochondria (the powerhouse) of your cells and can also damage the DNA.
Here is where all of this gets really interesting. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), which is part of the World Health Organization, has classified the frequency radiation of EMF of 30kHz-300 GHz (your cell phone emits about 2.8 GHz in that spectrum) as a group 2b “possible carcinogen”. The IARC gave this classification back in 2011. Fast forward to 2020 and the IARC has gathered enough evidence in the form of peer reviewed studies to move that band of radiation from the group 2b “possible carcinogen” all the way to the Group 1 Carcinogenic to Humans, right alongside cigarette smoking and arsenic. In other words, the IARC now states that radiation from 30 kHz-300 GHz, including your cell phone, Wi-Fi router, laptops, tablets, and WiFi ready appliances and smart TV’s, all cause cancer in humans.
According to the work of Professor’s Hardell and Nyberg that I cited above, there is also known links between “safe” EMF radiation and brain function, hearing, balance, vision, neuroendocrine disruption (think sleep-wake cycles, metabolism, menstral cycles, mood, etc), neurodegenerative diseases, immune system and hematology, fertility, and childhood development.
There is even known (and unknown) disruption of plant and insect life with EMF radiation. More and more of this is being seen with the roll out of the 5G networks.
So why isn’t this front-page news? Why is this not in the mainstream media? Why do you have to dig so hard to find these studies?
This is where the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP), a private German “not for profit” commission, and the Scientific Committee on Emerging and Newly Identified Health Risks (SCEBIHR) comes in. I added the quotation marks to “not for profit” because Hardell and Nyberg are adamant in their paper that the ICNIRP, which only has 13 members on their committee, has direct financial ties to the telecommunication industry and to government agencies. The ICNIRP claims on their website that they cannot take donations from companies or individuals that have any interest in the telecommunication or related industries. But when you read their annual reports, their income is only listed as income, not from the specific source AND there is no accountability as to the committee members personal interests.
The telecommunication industry and government agencies are relying on the latter groups to provide information and opinion on whether or not the EMF from cell phones and 5G are safe.
Both of these agencies provide studies to said agencies showing that none of the claims made by the IARC are invalid.
So, who is right and who is wrong? According to Dr. Mercola, most of the claims made by the telecom industry (and by our own FCC) are based on a test that uses a Specific Anthropomorphic Mannequin, or SAM. SAM is a model of a human head based on a 6’ tall 200-pound man. (The average human head would not be as thick as a 200-pound male skull, joking intended, and certainly doesn’t account for the thin skull of a child).
A cell phone (models of phones vary greatly between brands and models) is held to SAM’s head and heat is measured on the opposite side of SAM’s skull to determine the Specific Absorption Rate of the phone. The problem is that this will only measure how much the phone has the ability to heat the brain inside skull. It does not measure the oxidative effect the phone has on brain tissue. Therefore, according to the ICNIRP, the non-ionizing radiation given off by electrical devices does not heat the brain tissue in SAM and does not pose a threat to humans.
This method of testing is severely obsolete.
However, the telecommunication industry, the European Union, and the FCC accept this as gospel truth and completely ignore the scientific backing of the IARC.
In fact, Hardell and Nyberg specifically point to John Ryan, the public health director of the European Union. He was quoted in 2016 as saying “The evidence in the SCENIHR Final Opinion on EMF clearly and convincingly establishes the potential for health effects of exposure to electromagnetic fields [EMF]. Based on the evidence provided in this Opinion, the Committee is obligated to draw to the attention of the [EU] Commission that EMF is a new and emerging problem that may pose an actual or potential threat”
The very next year, Mr. Ryan was also quoted as saying: “There is consistent evidence that exposure to electromagnetic fields does not represent a health risk… if below the limits …”, an opinion suddenly consistent with the ICNIRP. One can only imagine why he would change sides so quickly. A quick look at his financial statements for that year would be very interesting.
It seems very clear to me that the telecommunication industry is ignoring the overwhelming evidence that all of this electromagnetic energy is harmful, and they are pushing 5G in major cities without clear evidence that it is not harmful to human life.
What can we do to protect ourselves?
First off, I reached out to Dr. Hardell and thanked him for his work. He expressed gratitude but also added their work needs donations. You can donate to their work on their website here.
Here are some other specific steps you can take:
- Turn off your Wi-Fi at night. I use a simple timer that I purchased at the hardware store. It is set to cut power from Midnight to 6 AM. That way the router resets itself every night and is shut down for several hours.
- Use wired headphones instead of Bluetooth
- Plug your phone directly into your car stereo instead of using Bluetooth.
- Avoid Wi-Fi enabled appliances. (Why on earth does your microwave need to be connected to the internet anyway?)
- Charge your cell phone in a separate room from where you sleep. (You shouldn’t be staring at a screen late at night anyway)
- Line your favorite hat with tin foil and wear it every day. OK. I was totally kidding on that one.
- Eat a clean diet and exercise! (Check out my wife and I’s cooking show on YouTube)
- There are several devices that can directly block EMF and 5g from your personal space all the way up to a large office building. You can see the entire line of Qi products here.
